Cara Williamson, San Francisco CA

I’ve always been a bit hesitant with the idea of a guide but after split boarding with AJ on a number of occasions I can hardly imagine going without him! I was new to the CO area so coming from sea-level, and super cautious about the snow pack here. Also being new to the backcountry but really interested in learning more, I wanted to make sure I went out with someone who was completely patient and held safety as the number one priority. AJ is most definitely that, always going to your pace but never making you feel like it. Also giving tips and sharing information as you go. His intuition to read your comfort levels for both pace and level of adventure seems effortless and ensures for an incredible day out in the mountains. I cannot recommend him enough to show you the outdoors in a way that makes you feel safe, fulfilled and educated.

My husband, Steve, and I just took your class at CAG this past weekend. I just wanted to let you know how impressed we both were with your tact and your passion. Steve has been skiing the backcountry, mostly solo, for 35 years and for the past 10 he has skied it almost exclusively, about 5 days a week all season, so I wasn't sure how he would take to being "taught". But you did such an excellent job - he really came away with a much more compassionate and team orientated attitude. It is just wonderful! And I have been fearful as I have aged and have not wanted to join him - but working together and listening to each other being the focus I really think we can start doing more tours together. So a big thank you.

"I grew up in the mountains. I have always loved them. But, I never had anyone to really teach me how to explore them. Or, climb them. AJ has provided me such a remarkable opportunity to conquer so many of my bucket-list items: rock climbing, multi-day backpacking, and hiking 14ers. I grew up playing sports, and it's very natural for me to get frustrated when I am not great at something. AJ is always so patient, and he never ceases to foster a positive atmosphere of learning. Too adventure with AJ is not about a list of rules. It's about learning how to respect the environment that I am blessed to call home and maximizing my abilities to get the most out of every opportunity."

Lucas Hale, Santa Cruz CA

"I had the opportunity to go into the backcountry of Colorado with AJ Appezzato this past winter. Being a first timer and having no experience in the backcountry I was definitely very nervous. I truly felt my safety and well being was top priority throughout the whole day, thus really calming my nerves and allowing me to really enjoy my experience.  An explanation of safety equipment and snow science from AJ made my experience not only super fun and safe, but educational. AJ took the time to tell me the do's and don'ts, what to look for and, definitely put me in the right spots to get the best runs the day had to offer. Not only is AJ a ripping snowboarder and super fun to ride with, his personality, his love for the outdoors and, passion for life's adventures made the day that much more special. As a guide and recommendation, AJ is at the top of my list and second to none. Go on a adventure with this guy and you wont be disappointed.

“This past winter was my first in Colorado, after having moved here from Alaska. I knew I wanted to stay mainly off of the resorts and grow my knowledge of riding in the backcountry, but didn’t feel comfortable with doing on my own. AJ helped out with this tremendously. He took his time to explain each facet of our trip and made my safety/learning his top priority. If you are looking for someone who will grow your understanding of snow and show you a great time, look no further. He has a vast amount of knowledge and isn’t afraid to have fun while sharing it. “

"A great fit for my wife and I. As a couple we are on different levels with splitboarding, Aj was able to cater to both the novice and experienced skill sets among the group for everyone to have a great time.

We also joined him for a climbing trip in Moab, UT. He kept us safe, and showed us to some amazing locations we could not have experienced without certain skills.

Overall, he is a well rounded guide, and I have already recommended him to friends."

Tom Scott, Longmont CO

“Full disclosure, AJ and I are friends. I met AJ through a mutual friend and we immediately connected on our passion and enthusiasm for the outdoors. I was an experienced in bounds snowboarder and had intentions to take my experience into the backcountry that year. That winter, I completed an AiARE level 1 avalanche training course under Aj’s instruction. Although friends, the course was strictly business.

Since completing the course, AJ has spent many days with me in the backcountry voluntarily, mentoring my development and growth. His skill level surpasses mine and he is always patient and enjoyable to tour with. He chooses terrain that matches and at appropriate times, challenges my skillset. I know there are times where he could get frustrated with my speed or fitness. He always carries a light hearted and cool demeanor and has never made me feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. When we are touring, AJ sets a fantastic example of good stewardship. He constantly talks to others in the parking lot and on the snow, offering expert advice and guidance. If he sees someone doing something dangerous, he never shies away from having a discussion with them and has a unique ability to communicate points of contention. AJ is fantastic instructor, mentor, steward of the backcountry and friend. Not to mention the guy rips on a split board. I am grateful to have someone like AJ in the backcountry, selflessly working to keep others safe.”
